Miami Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra is renowned for his ability to rally his team during the playoffs.

Despite a challenging period lately, the Heat are on the verge of securing a play-in tournament berth as they prepare to take on the Indiana Pacers in Indianapolis on Sunday.

Miami (39-35) has struggled, losing six of their last seven games, slipping to the 10th spot in the competitive Eastern Conference. Following a tough 149-128 defeat to the Cleveland Cavaliers on Friday, the Heat find themselves just two games behind the sixth-seeded Atlanta Hawks, heading in the wrong direction.

In their recent slump, Spoelstra’s squad has allowed an average of 128.9 points per game over seven matches, with the 149 points conceded to the Cavaliers marking a franchise record. This comes on the heels of a 120-103 victory against the same opponents just two days prior.

“We are extremely disappointed,” Spoelstra expressed. “Our defense was top-four just two weeks ago, and to witness it vanish when we needed it the most is unacceptable at this stage of the season.”

Throughout the arduous seven-game stretch, Miami faced playoff contenders every time, a stark departure from their usual performances as a playoff fixture for the past six seasons.

“We failed to approach these games like playoff matchups, which we should have,” said Heat center Bam Adebayo regarding their recent back-to-back games against the Cavaliers. “We must remain optimistic. In the next game, we must secure a win. The strategy is to limit our opponents to under 120, preferably 115, but it will be tough. We are cornered.”

Impressively, first-time All-Star Norman Powell leads the Heat with 22.1 points per game, while Tyler Herro averages 20.9 points in 27 games played. Adebayo contributes 20.2 points and 9.9 rebounds each game.

A victory over the struggling Pacers is crucial for the Heat to regain momentum.

Indiana (16-58) currently holds the league’s worst record and is on track for their most losses in franchise history. The Pacers haven’t secured a home victory since January 31 and endured losing streaks of 13 and 16 games this season.

The Pacers had an opportunity for a win on Friday but squandered a 24-point lead, eventually succumbing 114-113 to the Los Angeles Clippers after Kawhi Leonard’s clutch jumper with 0.4 seconds left.

Despite a disappointing finish, Indiana coach Rick Carlisle sees it as a valuable learning experience against a competitive team.

Pascal Siakam and Andrew Nembhard have been consistent performers for the Pacers this season, averaging 23.7 and 17.0 points per game, with Nembhard also dishing out 7.6 assists.
